Your new Council met for the first 'official' time last evening!
They started with the Organizational Meeting, where Council agreed for the candidate with the most votes in the election to begin the term as Deputy Mayor. That would be Coun. Brad Carr, who is the first Deputy Mayor of the new Council next to Mayor Shelly Shannon.
Council then made committee appointments, deciding which members would sit on which committees. There are a lot, and you can see the whole list in the agenda.
Finally, they determined the 2025 meeting schedule, adding a meeting over summer.
From there, we moved straight into a Governance and Priorities meeting, which covered the following:
➡ Council directed Administration to bring the procedural bylaw back for amendment to the Deputy Mayor rotation schedule, making it a one-year appointment rather than four months.
➡ Council reviewed Council boards and committees, deciding to defer discussion on the Mental Health Task Force Committee to a future meeting, and to accept the portion of the report relating to the RCMP CAC for information.
➡ Council indicated their support for Administration to partner with Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) on their proposed Highway 743 project within Town boundaries, allowing major overly work to be completed in conjunction with TEC's project. This approach benefits from the economies of scale pricing that the Province is able to obtain, given the larger scale of their projects. The Town's contribution would be ~$450,000 and would see paving from just about the top of the hill by Walmart to the highway intersection and down 78 Street, plus some other portions of road in the area.
And then there were a bunch of reports, such as department quarterly reports.
