In Peace River, two key utilities are managed wholly by the municipality: water and sewer, with partial management of waste and recycling collection. These services are not funded through property taxes. Instead, they are paid for by the users through a monthly billing system, as is typical for municipal utilities.

Water usage will vary depending on factors such as usage, occupancy level, and time of year. Increased water usage can be caused by things like malfunctioning toilet(s), leaky faucets and outside hose bibs, seasonal watering of trees, lawn and/or gardens, automatic irrigation systems, filling a hot tub, swimming pool or backyard ice rink, water-intensive appliances (e.g. water softener, humidifier, and/or air conditioner) that use more water at certain times of year, and increased occupancy.
Most water leaks are silent, which means you may not see evidence like a large puddle. It is good practice to check for leaks – indoor and outside – regularly. Toilets can be checked by putting a few drops of food colouring into the toilet tank and waiting ten minutes. If the water in the bowl changes colour your toilet is leaking and needs repair. You can also use your water meter to check for leaks. Turn off all taps and water appliances (washing machine/dishwasher) and then check the flow register of your meter. If it is registering water use, you have a leak somewhere in your house.
Repair any leaking taps or toilets to prevent continued leakage/wastage. If you are unable to repair the leak right away, shut the water off to the water appliance if the usage is excessive.
Missed pickups can be reported to the Town Office at 780-624-2574 or by completing the Report a Missed Pickup form.
Water breaks can be reported to the main office at 780-624-2574 during office hours or to Public Works at 780-624-3085 (24-hour emergency line).
Public Works can shut off/turn on your water in an emergency or if you need plumbing repairs. They can be contacted at 780-624-3085. For non-emergencies, we require 48 hours notice. A fee for this service maybe added to your monthly utility bill.
Many items can cause sewer blockages, even those labeled as flushable. Items that should never be flushed or poured down the drain include fats, oils, and greases; feminine hygiene products; baby wipes; personal cleansing wipes; makeup removal wipes; cotton balls; cotton swabs; band-aids; disposable diapers; dental floss; and cat litter.

10 Tips to Conserve Water
- Turn off the water when you wash your hands. Turn the water back on to rinse once you have lathered your hands.
- Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.
- Fix leaks – hire a plumber or fix it yourself. Leaking taps and toilets use large volumes of water.
- Older Toilets use large amount of water to flush. You can displace water in the tank by using a milk jug or 2L pop bottle to reduce the amount of water in the tank. Be sure your float is not sitting to high which can cause the water to keep running or the volume to be higher than necessary.
- Shorten shower duration or lessen the amount of water for baths.
- Choose efficient water fixtures e.g. showerheads, low flow toilets, high efficiency washing machines and dishwashers.
- Don’t run the dishwasher until you have a full load.
- Install a rain barrel. Rainwater can be used to water plants and reduce your water consumption.
- Water outdoor plants early in the morning. More water is available to the plant as less water evaporates during the cooler mornings.
- Water your garden with a watering can rather than the water hose. Prevent evaporation by using mulch such as bark, wood chips or straw to save water.
