The cost of Policing Services is divided between a municipality and the Federal government based on the size of municipality, and is administered through a Municipal Police Service Agreement.

Municipalities with a population

over 50,000 - 100% responsible to fund their municipal police service
over 15,000 - 90% funded by the municipality / 10% federal funding
5,001 to 15,000 - 70% funded by the municipality / 30% federal funding
5,000 and under - 10-30% in accordance with police funding model

Grants may also be provided by the Government of Alberta to assist in funding RCMP Services.

In 2024

the Town of Peace River paid approximately $2.6M for RCMP Services.

The online crime reporting tool allows Albertans to report select property crimes electronically.

You can use Online Crime Reporting if:

You have lost something that costs less than $5000
Someone has stolen something from you that costs less than $5000
Someone has vandalized your property or vehicle and it will cost less than $5000 to repair it
The crime happened within the jurisdiction of the Alberta RCMP

You cannot use Online Crime Reporting if:

There is a witness or suspect
There are lost or stolen items involving personal identity, firearms, license plates or decals

What is the CAPTURE Program?

Community Assisted Policing Through Use of Recorded Evidence (CAPTURE).

CAPTURE allows members of the public to register their home or business security cameras with the RCMP with the goal of reducing the amount of time it would take an investigator to locate potential video evidence. Investigators will be able to view a map of registered security cameras in order to determine whether any are in the vicinity of a crime scene.

Investigators can then contact the registered owner of the camera and arrange with them to obtain a copy of the video. Investigators may also request the registrant upload a portion of their video to the CAPTURE website so they can view and assess it for evidentiary value before making arrangements to collect it in-person.

If you register for CAPTURE, your information remains confidential and the RCMP do not have access to your camera footage. They are simply equipped with the knowledge that your camera exists and are provided with your contact information. You are not obligated to provide the footage and participation is completely voluntary.
