About our Community Peace Officers

Community Peace Officers (CPOs) play a distinct role in keeping our community safe. The Town of Peace River's CPOs are appointed under the Provincial Peace Officer Act by the Alberta Ministry of Public Safety and Emergency Services. Their primary role is to enforce select provincial laws and municipal regulations, acting as a bridge between local issues and the police.

What is the scope of authority for a Community Peace Officer?

  • Traffic Enforcement: CPOs routinely monitor school zones, issue speeding tickets, conduct traffic stops, and check for commercial vehicle compliance under the provincial Traffic Safety Act.
  • Provincial Statute Enforcement: They have the provincial authority to enforce legislation such as the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act, the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act, and the Animal Protection Act.
  • Public Facility Security & First Response: They patrol public spaces, transit hubs, and parks and respond to non-criminal emergencies.
