(Oct 15) Update on Belle Centre fire:
At approximately 3:45am on Monday, October 13, the Peace River Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the old Belle Centre building on 96 Street.
On arrival, firefighters observed smoke coming from the roof and visible flames through an open door on the west side of the building. Crews began an interior attack but were forced to withdraw due to the extreme heat and instability of the roof.
Defensive tactics were then deployed, with hose streams directed into the structure from the exterior.
The fire spread through the ceiling in the south portion of the building and reached the entry vestibule on the east side. Damage to the vestibule made it unsafe, and it was removed to improve access for firefighting operations. The building sustained extensive fire, smoke, heat, and water damage, and the roof remains unstable.
The building was vacant and utilities had been disconnected. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Fire crews were on scene for approximately 11 hours. No injuries were reported.
Mutual aid was provided by the Weberville and St. Isidore Fire Departments. The Peace River Fire Department extends its thanks for their assistance.
