We know many people have been wondering why the cleanup of the fire-damaged building downtown known as Juliette's Place is taking so long.
Following the fire in September 2021, the property had to go through a formal tax recovery process before the Town could take ownership. That process is set by provincial law.
When a property owner falls into significant tax arrears, there’s a multi-step, legally required procedure before a municipality can assume title. That includes official notices, waiting periods, and opportunities for the owner to pay the arrears or reclaim the property. These timelines are not something we can shorten.
The good news is that process is nearly complete, and once the Town officially takes title, we’ll put out an Expression of Interest for someone to clean up the site and redevelop it.
We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through the legal steps to bring this important downtown property back into productive use. We'll be glad to see this eyesore cleaned up too.
