The Town of Peace River has applied to Environment and Climate Change Canada for a Temporary Bypass Authorization (TBA) to ultimately replace a critical piece of equipment at our Wastewater Treatment Plant.
A TBA allows the owner or operator of a wastewater system to bypass one or more treatment processes for a defined period of time. In this case, a TBA is required for us to drain the clarifier, which is the final step in our treatment process.
Sewage discharged from our facility during the temporary bypass will still go through our grit removal process, our mechanical screens, and the biological treatment process.
With the clarifier offline, it is possible that we will not be able to meet all of our treatment objectives and could see a rise in the amount of suspended solids discharged to the river, but our operations team is working with process specialists to minimize these risks.
We previously completed the first shutdown in February 2025. We now anticipate a second shutdown of approximately 20 days to complete the second phase of the replacement work. The second shutdown is expected to start on September 19, 2025.
The exact timing of each shutdown will be subject to regulatory approvals, equipment delivery, and contractor availability.
