Peace Regional Energy Alliance (PREA) Applauds Tri-Jurisdictional MOU on Nuclear Energy and Grid Integration

PEACE RIVER, AB — September 17, 2026 — The Peace Regional Energy Alliance (PREA) strongly supports this week’s landmark announcement by the governments of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to advance collaboration on nuclear energy technologies and regional electricity grid integration.

 

This historic agreement establishes a unified framework to share information, evaluate nuclear generation—including large-scale reactors, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), and microreactors—and explore enhanced regional transmission infrastructure. As electricity demand rises rapidly across Western Canada and the North, this tri-jurisdictional partnership is a vital step toward safeguarding grid reliability, ensuring long-term affordability, and achieving a sustainable, low-emission energy future. This also marks an important aspect of development and deployment of a new nuclear chain supply for Western Canada.

 

For the Peace Region of northwestern Alberta, this announcement marks a pivotal turning point. Following the release of its comprehensive Position Paper in July 2026, PREA has actively advocated for the Peace Region to be designated as the premier location for future provincial nuclear developments. The region possesses unique geographic and economic advantages, including robust land and water resources, industrial infrastructure potential, new supply chain management and a skilled workforce ready for diversification.

"With the Peace River Nuclear Power Project already moving through the federal impact assessment phases, our municipalities are ready to act as a primary corridor for this emerging sector. This aligns perfectly with our recent Position Paper released mid-summer 2026 as we continue to support the Government of Alberta’s on-going work on a nuclear energy framework."

 

The tri-jurisdictional MOU will coordinate efforts on regulatory approvals, environmental assessments, financing models, and uranium supply chains—critical areas that will benefit from early municipal leadership and community engagement. PREA stands ready to collaborate with the Government of Alberta as it prepares to release its official nuclear energy roadmap.

PREA remains committed to ensuring that northwestern Albertans receive unbiased, evidence-based information regarding nuclear technologies while preparing local infrastructure to capitalize on billions in potential energy investments, new supply chains, and high-paying jobs.
