Fire Prevention Week: Smoke Alarm Sounds

Hey…wanna hear the most annoying sound in the world?

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

That, or smoke alarms.

But they're annoying for a good reason: The death rate per 1,000 home structure fires is approximately 60 percent lower in homes with working smoke alarms than in homes with no alarms or none that operated, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Experts say you may have less than 3 minutes to safely escape a typical home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds.

If you've ever wondered exactly what the different sounds on your alarms mean, Fire Chief Tim Harris is here to break it down!

For 2024 Fire Prevention Week, we're sharing advice from Chief Harris on smoke alarms all week.
At the end of it, you're invited to an open house at the fire hall downtown 9am - 1pm Saturday, October 12.

We'll have a free pancake breakfast and lots of fire safety demonstrations and activities.
