Council Highlights: March 10, 2025

Council met last night.

Here are some highlights:

  • Laura Brandon, Forestry Educator Work Wild, presented to Council about the work of the Alberta Forest Products Association and the impact U.S. tariffs represent. Subsequently, Council voted to send letters of support to higher levels of government as requested by the Alberta Forest Products Association. Coun. Don Good suggested that members of the public affected by forestry industry issues could also be encouraged to send letters of support.   • Tanya Bell, Director of Community Services, notified Council about the public posting of the Disposal of Town-Owned Lands at 8700 100 Avenue, Peace River (Town-owned portion of former Lions Campground). This notice provides the community with an opportunity to petition disposal of the property. Following the last day of the advertisement (March 20, 2025), the community has a 15-day period to submit a petition against the disposal.
  • Council appointed Annievev Rey as a public member-at-large and Inga Lanctot as a representative of Indigenous Heritage to the Community Services Board for three-year terms.
  • Daniel Cress, Director of Protective Services, presented the Protective Services Call Report for February 2025. February included 68 complaints, 10 Town Tags issued, 1 provincial ticket issued, and 40 warnings given. An unsightly property file bylaw has been working to address since last summer was also heard by the court in February, where the judge ruled in favour of the Town.
  • Council approved additional per diem days for Mayor Elaine Manzer's attendance at the Rural Education Symposium.
  • Council directed Administration to provide a letter of support to the County of Northern Lights for their funding application under the Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program for an upcoming asphalt overlay project at the Manning Airport.
