If you missed Council on Monday, here are some highlights:
➡ Three groups presented for Grants to Organizations. Those included Vision Learning Centre, seeking funding for a digital and workplace skills community growth program; Peace River High School, seeking support for the 2A Boys Basketball Provincials; and Glenmary School, seeking support for the 2A Girls Basketball Provincials. United Way didn't present in person but also submitted a grant request for their Tools for Schools project. Council will review the requests and make any funding decisions in a future meeting.
➡ Council amended Bylaw No. 2061, Nuisance & Unsightly Property Bylaw, to ensure fine amounts are aligned with severity of infraction, plus other minor changes to improve clarity and enforcement capabilities.
➡ Council accepted the final Active Transportation Plan for information. The plan establishes a long-term active transportation network that will be used to inform project priorities and aid in establishing the direction for short- and long-term active transportation infrastructure. The plan will guide capital planning and investment in new infrastructure and maintenance of existing and new infrastructure. The ATP will also enhance the Town’s eligibility for many provincial and federal funding opportunities available for active transportation facilities.
➡ Tanya Bell, Director of Community Services, provided an update on the Wayfinding and Tourism Signage project. This project, funded in part with a $200,000 matching grant from the Northern and Regional Economic Development (NRED) program, will see signs installed around Peace River helping direct travellers to local destinations. We anticipate installation to begin next year.
➡ Barb Miller, Chief Administrative Officer, provided an update on grant funding opportunities under the First Nation-Municipal Community Economic Development Initiative. The Town sees this as a great opportunity to continue building our relationship with Woodland Cree First Nation. With the nature of some upcoming projects involving WCFN, both administrations worked to submit a joint application under the program. We are hopeful an announcement of successful applicants will be made soon.
➡ Council approved the addition of a permanent full-time Executive Assistant position and the reclassification of the Legislative Services Coordinator to Manager. This would bolster the Town's ability to manage administrative needs and support Council. Council directed Administration to initiate recruitment of the executive assistant and bring a draft organizational chart back for approval before the end of the term.
