Our first Council meeting of the new year is over!
If you missed it, here are some highlights:
- Council passed first reading of Bylaw No. 2168 to add “Domestic Animal Care Services” to eight land use districts in Land Use Bylaw No. 1891.
- Council passed first reading of Bylaw No. 2169, which amends Land Use Bylaw No. 1891 by redistricting Plan 8421257 Parcel B (the Town-owned portion of 'Lions Campground') from Community Development District (COM) to Direct Control District (DIR-C).
- We welcomed our new Director of Protective Services, Daniel Cress! We will have more information on our new director and his areas of focus soon.
- Council directed Administration to transition management of household recycling services (blue bag program) to Circular Materials. This move is part of the Extended Producer Responsibility framework being rolled out in Alberta, where producers of recyclable wastes become responsible for paying for and managing those streams, shifting the burden off municipalities. This will result in cost savings to the Town of approximately $150,000 from the 2026 operating budget and in future years.
- Council authorized Administration to register a Tax Forfeiture on Title for several properties, including roll number(s) 202000, 319026, and 503202.
- Council approved a one-year extension of the existing Fire Services Agreement with the County of Northern Lights, to December 31, 2025, with a percentage rate increase to the amount paid in 2024 equal to the percent increase of the Town of Peace River’s 2025 municipal requisition (2%).
- Chief Administrative Officer Barb Miller informed Council that the Town was successful in its application to be one of four participants in the Enabling Housing Choice North Project. The project will study the local housing landscape and use the findings to augment the Guidebook to Diversifying Housing in Rural Communities.
And always more.
