Council and CAO Meet with Ministers

Mayor Elaine Manzer, Coun. Byron Schamehorn, Coun. Shelly Shannon, and Chief Administrative Officer Barb Miller met with Deputy Premier and Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis this week to discuss public safety, homelessness, addiction, and crime in Peace River.

Also in the meeting were Minister of Mental Health and Addictions Dan Williams, Parliamentary Secretary for Indigenous and Rural Police MLA Nolan Dyck, and staff.

We were thankful for this opportunity to discuss these important issues, as well as grateful to Minister Ellis for the $30,000 grant funding to conduct a policing study to determine the best model to address these challenges in our community.

Everyone knows these issues are not unique to Peace River, but that makes them no less urgent to be addressed. We've been lobbying the province for help since 2023. We hear the community's concerns about safety and the impact on businesses.

There's no magic solution, but we're committed to continue lobbying, finding and experimenting with ways to deal with it municipally, and pursuing a larger effort to to keep the 'peace' in Peace River.
