Council Highlights: May 25, 2026

Catch Council on Monday, May 25?

Here are some highlights:

➡ Peace River Citizens on Patrol presented an update on their volunteer work supporting community safety and crime prevention in the area.

➡ Council accepted a briefing note regarding the upcoming filming of 72 Hours to Survive in Peace River in July. Peace River was selected as a filming location for Episode 3 of the educational survival series, which will showcase the area’s natural beauty and appear on Wild TV.

➡ Council accepted an update on the $250,000 Labour Market Partnership grant secured by Northern Sunrise County, with the Town of Peace River and Lac Cardinal Economic Development participating as regional partners. The project will support workforce planning, attraction, and retention work across the region, with a focus on understanding current and future labour market needs.

➡ Council approved the Town of Peace River serving as seconder for the City of Edmonton’s Alberta Municipalities resolution regarding a proposed “Derelict Non-Residential Tax Subclass.” If supported through Alberta Municipalities, the resolution would ask the Government of Alberta to amend the Municipal Government Act to give municipalities more tools to address derelict non-residential properties.

➡ Council endorsed Community Futures Lac La Biche’s advocacy initiative for a Provincial Northern Alberta Living Allowance. The initiative calls for provincial support to help address cost-of-living, workforce attraction, and retention challenges faced by northern Alberta communities. Council’s support adds Peace River’s voice to a broader regional advocacy effort focused on making northern communities more competitive places to live and work.

Always more.
