Warming Temperatures and Snow Melt: What to Know

We’re expecting a warming trend starting Saturday and continuing through mid-week. With the amount of snow we’ve had over the past month, we want to share what the Town is doing and what residents can do to prepare.

What the Town is doing
• We are in regular contact with the Province. At this time, they are not anticipating river flooding locally, but conditions are being monitored closely with BC Hydro.
• We’re coordinating with emergency response partners and are prepared to assist with access issues if needed.
• Most major roads have had snow removal completed. Crews will continue working through the weekend and into next week, focusing on the North End and Saddleback areas where snow accumulation remains highest.
• A small crew will also be working on some of the worst alleys. Under the Town’s Snow Removal Policy, alleys are the last priority.
• Storm sewer outlets through the berms remain closed by design to prevent river water from backing up into lower-lying neighbourhoods. Because of this, localized ponding may occur, which is normal during melt conditions. Crews will be monitoring and managing water as needed. See the map for details of where ponding might happen.

If you see significant ponding and Town crews are not already in the area, please contact Public Works at 780-624-3085. This number is monitored, logged, and has an escalation process in place.

What residents and businesses can do
• Clear snow away from foundations and window wells.
• Consider having excess roof snow removed by qualified contractors. Warming and rain can make snow much heavier and pose a collapsing threat to structures.
• Be cautious of shifting or falling snow and ice from roofs during melt.
• Ensure any exhaust outlets (chimney, dryer, etc) are free from blockage.
• Travel slowly and carefully in potentially icy conditions.
• Commercial property owners should ensure roof drainage systems connected to the storm system are not frozen.

Please note that crews are dispatched based on urgency and safety. Requests such as sidewalk salting or sanding may be logged for later attention. Our sanding unit generally operates daily during winter operations, including weekends.

We’ll share updates if anything changes.
