Forty-five years and countless babies later, Dr. Karen Lundgard officially retired as a family physician on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
The 72-year-old doctor was a mainstay in Peace River healthcare, having delivered multiple generations of babies and playing a leading role in the development of Sunrise Medical Centre. In 2010, she was named Family Physician of the Year by the Alberta College of Family Physicians.
"I can think of lives I've saved," said Lundgard on her retirement day when asked about highlights over her career. "I've got at least three third-generation babies that I've delivered. Just getting to know my patients and their families and getting to be part of their lives has been so special."
After a rewarding career, she's going to take more time for herself now, but she's not leaving Peace River.
"This is my community," said Lundgard. "I'm not moving away."
Her 80-hour weeks are over, but true to the industry, she mentioned she might still do the odd half-day in the clinic to help out, mostly focused on prenatal visits and sexual health. For the time being, she's maintaining her two senior leadership roles in Alberta Health Services, so Lundgard will continue to be involved in healthcare in the region.
As for those getting into the industry, she says, "Do it. We definitely need more doctors. Yes, it's very challenging, but you can also work smarter, not more."
She encouraged anyone interested in going into medical school to get in touch with doctors in Peace River, who would gladly assist prospects on their journey.
Lundgard expressed a deep commitment to Peace River and sense of fulfillment from her medical career, expressing thanks to her colleagues, staff, and everyone along her path.
We join in that thank you – THANK YOU, DR. LUNDGARD!
