Update on the Peace River Nuclear Power Project review:
The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) has released a Summary of Issues related to the proposed Peace River Nuclear Power Project. This document outlines the key concerns raised by municipalities, local residents, Indigenous communities, and other stakeholders during the public comment period earlier this spring.
Some of the issues raised include:
• Impacts on water use and the Peace River ecosystem
• Concerns about fish and wildlife, including species at risk
• Health and safety concerns around nuclear materials
• Strain on local infrastructure and housing
• Impacts on Indigenous rights, culture, and traditional land use
• Emergency preparedness and waste storage
• Potential effects of climate change on the project
The project proponent, Energy Alberta, must now respond to these concerns. Their responses will help IAAC determine whether a full federal impact assessment is required. If so, the issues raised will guide the scope of that assessment.
You can view the full summary and original submissions on the Canadian Impact Assessment Registry under Project #89430, or by clicking this link: https://iaac-aeic.gc.ca/050/evaluations/document/161842...
