Enforcing Left-of-Centre Turns

Did you know you're not allowed to turn left to cross the solid yellow line into an angled parking space downtown?

To improve road and pedestrian safety, our Protective Services Department will begin educating on and enforcing left-of-centre turns, particularly downtown, where some drivers have been turning left across Main Street into angled parking stalls on the opposite side.

These types of turns are not permitted under Alberta’s Use of Highway and Rules of the Road Regulation.

Drivers must remain on the right side of the centre line unless overtaking another vehicle, avoiding an obstruction, or turning left into a side street, private road, or driveway. Turning left across the centre line into angled parking stalls is not included among the permitted exceptions. Such turns create a hazard for other drivers and pedestrians, especially in busy downtown areas.

The Town’s Community Peace Officer team will focus on education and awareness throughout the coming weeks, followed by enforcement.

Drivers found making left-of-centre turns into angled parking stalls could face a $243 fine.
This effort supports the Town’s goal of maintaining a safe and connected community for all residents. The rule will also be included for additional clarity in an upcoming update to the Town’s Traffic and Streets Bylaw.
