Catch Council on Monday?
Here are some highlights from the June 9 meeting:
- Energy Alberta gave a presentation on the Peace River Nuclear Power Project plans. Representatives answered questions and provided an update on the process, as two sites north of town are under consideration.
- Council gave first reading to Bylaw No. 2176 – Assessment of Manufactured Home Communities, which would make park owners responsible for paying residents' property taxes. These costs could then be recouped from residents through rent or other means as determined by the park owners. Administration proposed the bylaw take effect January 1, 2027, to allow time for rental agreements to be revised and implementation details to be finalized.
- Council gave second reading to Bylaw No. 2177 – Nuisance and Unsightly Property Amendment, which aligns fine amounts with the severity of infractions, along with other minor updates to improve clarity and enforcement.
- Council continued to discuss the Land Use Bylaw Refresh, including rules for seacan storage for businesses, placement of park models/trailers on properties, and landscaping requirements.
- Council directed Administration to write a letter regarding the Village of Hines Creek’s Alberta Municipalities resolution to modernize and streamline bacterial water testing. Support was indicated specifically for Option 3 in the RFD: creation of provincial labs to serve rural Northern and Southern Alberta and reduce turnaround times.
